About the Position:
The Vice President's Office for Student Affairs is committed to the professional and personal development of our students, staff and faculty; striving to operate in a transparent, collaborative and developmental environment that demonstrates the value of students, staff and administrators to make up the Division. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Associate Vice President, Student Affairs and Dean of Students. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Reporting directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA), the Senior Associate Vice President (AVP), Student Affairs and Dean of Students is a member of the VPSA Management Team and the Student Affairs Leadership Team. The AVP administers policies affecting the academic and developmental needs of students and has direct responsibility for overseeing the directors of specific units, assisting them in planning and implementing programs, budgets, personnel matters, and policies. Serves on various university committees and fosters an appreciation for students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds. The AVP is instrumental in promoting CSUF as a Hispanic Serving Institution and Asian/Pacific Islander Serving Institution. Seeks grant-funding sources and raises funds for scholarships. Represents CSUF at various community relations events, government relations events, and represents the President and VPSA at various community events. Assists the VPSA in providing overall administrative leadership for the Division of Student Affairs and serves in the Vice President's place when necessary. Develops and implements programs and projects within the division. Handles individual student problems, complaints, and issues as necessary. Serves as the lead for the divisions Diversity Equity and Inclusion strategic plan and support for the University Strategic Plan. Oversees the divisions assessment. The AVP has campus-wide responsibilities including working with the offices of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Vice President of Administration and Finance, University Advancement, Vice President for Information Technology, the Division of Human Resources, Diversity and Inclusion, and other units to enrich student life and the student experience.

As the Dean of Students, the AVP will assist in supporting a holistic student learning environment, enriches campus lie, and fosters student engagement for both residential and commuter students, builds a strong intercultural campus community and promotes student success. The AVP has indirect responsibility for a behavioral intervention team and student conduct. Serves as the liaison to Associated Students, Inc., food and housing insecurity, and Mediation and Advocacy efforts on behalf of students. The Office of the Dean of Students serves as the point of contact for crisis response involving students and often serves in the role as spokesperson for the university in crisis situations. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, psychology, higher education administration, student personnel, or a closely related field. Seven to ten years of higher education experience including both supervisory and budgetary responsibilities.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
Doctorate from an accredited college or university in a relevant field such as counseling, psychology or higher education administration. Experience working with and advocating for ethnically and culturally diverse student populations at the higher education level. Demonstrated management/administrative skills (for policy, budget, supervisory, and program development and evaluation responsibilities). Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain interpersonal professional relationships and excellent analytical and written communication and presentation skills. Extensive knowledge of higher education, student affairs philosophy, best practices, and the policies and procedures of a higher education institution. Knowledge of emerging trends and needs in the student population.
