Assistant Dean of Retention and Persistence Programs

Job Summary:
The Assistant Dean of Retention and Persistence Programs in the Center of Academic and Student Achievement (CASA) will aid in the development and administration of the Black Achievement, Success and Engagement Program (BASE), and serve as a consultant on university wide retention programs, including but not limited to the following: the PACT Program, and the Muscat Scholars Program (MSP). These programs are part of a dynamic and comprehensive initiative that builds on USF's commitment to inclusive excellence and diversity by creating academically challenging, personally supportive, and empowering educational experiences for underrepresented students. The Assistant Dean, in consultation with the CASA AVP/Dean and Associate Dean, will also work to maintain and create new program initiatives in support of student retention, and improve four-year graduation rates based on student persistence trends, program data and University goals.

As a member of the larger staff in Student Life, CASA supports student development in the Jesuit Catholic tradition. The mission of Student Life is to fully support holistic student development within a social justice framework centered in preparing students to be caring, socially responsible citizens in our global and local community.

Full Job Description:

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collect, analyze and interpret relevant data to determine immediate and long-term needs and strategies to support historically underserved students.
  • Collaborate closely and create partnerships with appropriate University offices to facilitate effective outreach to current and incoming underserved students / communities.
  • Represent BASE and CASA at Admissions events and student orientation programs, conducting workshop(s) as requested at events such as Overnight programs, Admit Days, and High School Counselor Fly-ins.
  • In conjunction with the Associate Dean, oversee the development and implementation of CASA retention and persistence programs and initiatives.
  • Assist in management of budgets allocated towards retention and persistence programs.
  • Serve as the academic success coach for students in BASE, in addition to a potential caseload of students based on student persistence trends, in support of the University's retention and graduation goals
  • Participate in CASA internal committees and leadership meetings as appropriate.


Specific Duties:

Black Achievement, Success and Engagement (BASE) Program (90%)

In collaboration with the Faculty Director, the Assistant Dean will develop and administer programs to provide black students with a critical sense of belonging, opportunities for engagement in all aspects of university life and in the broader Bay Area community, and the resources, skills and support necessary to achieve academic excellence and pursue rich and rewarding careers after graduation.

Leadership
  • Work collaboratively with University leadership to establish University-wide retention goals and create a comprehensive strategic plan to meet established goals.
  • Develop comprehensive and transparent data tracking systems to identify causes of and risks of student attrition, and aid in the assessment of BASE programs.
  • Design effective data-driven policies and programs to increase retention, persistence and success of Black-identified students.
  • Advise internal campus partners, schools and departments in the design of strategies to support the success and persistence of Black students in their specific units.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for the program budget including the dissemination of designated funds for students facing financial hardship and in need of professional development.
  • Manage and support the efficient operation of the Black Resource Center.
  • Work collaboratively with the Faculty Director and Development to identify and build relationships with potential donors.
  • Develop partnerships with corporate representatives, government officials, and community leaders to increase awareness of BASE, and to develop internship, engagement and job pipelines for Black identified students.
  • Jointly supervise the BASE Program Manager in conjunction with the Faculty Director, including management of payroll and performance evaluations.
  • Coordinate the efficient operation of the BASE Advisory Board, in conjunction with the Faculty Director.


Student Support
  • Oversee the on-boarding process for students admitted to the Black Living Learning Community and Black Scholars Program. This includes, but is not limited to program admission communication/welcome packet, move-in checklist, contact list of resources, and program requirements.
  • Develop policies and procedures to ensure students who participate in the Black Living Learning Community and Black Scholars Program adhere to all university policies
  • Monitor the academic progress of students admitted to the Black Living Learning Community and Black Scholars Program, and provide academic coaching and assistance with registration in collaboration with major advisers.
  • Design and facilitate student-centered success programming, including resiliency, leadership and navigating USF workshops.
  • Develop and implement mentorship programs that nurture academic and personal growth.


Support/Consult with Retention and Persistence Programs (10%)

In collaboration with the PACT and MSP leadership, administer program activities and events to provide participants with skill-based development, support, and opportunities to enhance their overall academic career at University of San Francisco with the desire to increase retention and graduation rates.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for program budgets.
  • Develop and coordinate student-centered programming that provides constructive exploration of racial identity and socialization.
  • Oversee the recruitment and participation of faculty, staff, and student staff in the program.
  • Develop and provide program information to prospective applicants.
  • Coordinate recruitment, train and supervise student interns and assistants.
  • Develop community partnerships with local K-12 schools and organizations who serve students who identify as students of color.
  • Monitor the academic progress of students admitted to the program and provide academic coaching and assistance.

Other Responsibilities:
Responsibilities may include occasional travel for recruiting and program events. Requires a flexible work schedule to accommodate program needs (i.e., beginning later in the day and extending work hours to the early evening for programs and events). Responsibilities will involve some weekend assignments. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in higher education administration, college student services administration, student affairs, counseling, sociology, ethnic studies, women's studies, gender studies or other related field and one to two years in multicultural programming experience required. Specific experience in providing direct services to historically underrepresented and LGBTQ students in an urban, multicultural environment preferred.
  • Five to seven years' experience in supervising with an emphasis on developmental education/student development theory and advising.
  • A willingness to respect and actively support the goals and vision of Jesuit education in general and the University of San Francisco in particular.
  • Experience with data analysis and storytelling
  • Multi-tasking, organizational, and caseload management skills required.
  • Candidate must be able to work closely with faculty and staff to incorporate curricular and co-curricular elements in program and service development.
  • Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills in facilitating and maintaining collaborative relationships with campus constituencies.
  • Proven ability to interact effectively and professionally with students, faculty, staff, and administrators from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate excellent presentation and oral communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills including website, newsletter, and social media content development. Knowledgeable navigating web-based and database advising applications preferred.
  • Ability to integrate developmental and multicultural student-centered success programming.
  • Excellent leadership and team-building skills.
