Provides student mental health counseling and assigned associated services, including individual and group acute care therapy, crisis intervention, assessment, conduct consultation, and mental health awareness and promotion services, and serves as the department administrator/manager in the absence of or in coordination with the Associate Dean of Student Health and Wellness.
Distinguishing Career Features
The College Psychologist reports to the Associate Dean of Student Health and Wellness. This position carries out the clinical supervision, including ongoing guidance and evaluation of a small program of fourth-year practicum students. Provides consultations, trainings, and presentations to college personnel on matters of student mental health, including conduct management and crisis response; conducts campus outreach; and maintains currency in the literature on current mental health trends and practices. This position keeps the department mental health protocols compliant with applicable laws and regulations, consistent with generally accepted safe and effective practices, and responsive as per generally accepted professional standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate the provision and delivery of student mental health services including serving as a primary resource to the district on student mental health concerns and strategies.
- Follow standard protocols for psychological counseling, including strictly adhering to the ethical principles of psychologists as promulgated by the APA1 and the laws and regulations pertaining to the practice of psychology in the State of California.
- Provide brief psychological counseling to students with emotional and social problems; conduct therapy sessions, as per scope of practice.
- Provide brief therapy and solution-focused psychological services to students, including problem resolution, crisis intervention, and assessing, planning, and implementing immediate and longer-range goals.
- Deal effectively and rapidly with those in psychological crisis, including providing crisis intervention, evaluation and referral to community resources, as well as collaborate with community psychiatric evaluation teams as needed.
- Serve as a resource and liaison for the college community on issues of health and psychological health promotion, which may include classroom presentations, resource material development, committee membership, and staff/faculty professional development activities.
- Participate in the work of and serve on the Crisis Assessment, Intervention, and Response (CAIR) Team, including regular meetings, case reviews, publishing the on-call calendar and response handbook, and related duties.
- Coordinate internship program in professional clinical psychology and serve as the primary site supervisor for professional school- and/or university-certified doctoral candidate and post-doctoral psychology interns.
- Review, research and modify mental health protocols on an annual basis to assure compliance with laws, regulations, and generally accepted professional standards of practice.
- Establish positive relationships with campus staff, faculty, and community mental health providers.
- Gather data on a regular basis to determine campus trends and needs, and to recommend program modifications in response to identified needs.
- Participate in the administration of and compliance with collective bargaining agreements, Board Policies, and Administrative Procedures,
- Participate in the recruitment and selection of Student Health Services personnel.
- Plan and implement relevant and required training programs for District personnel.
- Represent the College and/or department at designated campus, community, and related activities and events.
- Participate on committees, task forces, and in special assignments.
- Lead, supervise and train department's personnel to provide high quality of service as directed by the Associate Dean.
- Ensure accuracy of print and online publications related to the area of responsibility.
- Maintain currency of knowledge and skills related to the duties and responsibilities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications in Education and Experience
- Doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology from an APA and regionally accredited institution (PsyD or PhD).
- A minimum of one (1) year of post-licensure experience in an acute mental health care setting, facility, or private practice.
- Recent experience in clinical or counseling psychology providing direct psychological counseling to clients and/or patients.
- Experience in treatment utilizing a model of brief therapy.
- Meet all California requirements to provide supervision to qualified doctoral candidate and post-doctoral interns.
- Therapeutic experience in working with clients from diverse backgrounds and/or those for whom English is not the first language. Licenses and Certificates

- Possession of a current and valid license as a Psychologist in the State of California, issued by the California State Board of Psychology, or equivalent if out of state with licensure in California required within one year of employment with the District
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities This position requires professional knowledge of:
- Mental health issues common to the community college population.
- Crisis intervention strategies including the design and implementation of effective prevention, response, and debriefing programs.
- Current standards of practice including State and Federal regulations that apply to the provision of mental health services on a community college campus; as well as applicable laws and regulations in the areas of child and elder abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, the Violence Against Women Act and related laws and regulations, emergency psychiatric evaluations and holds, privacy regulations, treatment of minors, Tarasoff mandates, and other state and federal applicable laws and regulations and District policies and procedures.
This position requires demonstrated skills and abilities to:

- Apply legal and ethical standards and guidelines to all aspects of practice

Physical AbilitiesThis position requires the physical ability to:
- Function in an office environment performing work of primarily a sedentary nature with some requirement to move about campus and to off-campus locales.

Working ConditionsWork is mainly performed indoors in a health center environment where safety considerations exist. Exposure to electrical energy, toxins, medications, blood, body fluids, communicable diseases, and laboratory materials and equipment is possible.

This is a full-time 12-calendar month academic manager position.
An annual stipend of $3,146 shall be provided to management employees with an earned doctorate degree.
