Job Title:
Assistant Professor, Term, Neuroscience, College of Arts and Sciences

Job Summary:
The University of San Francisco invites applications for a one-year term Assistant Professor (or Associate Professor status as warranted with appropriate full-time academic experiences), to begin August 2023, with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon funding approval. This position seeks candidates who have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and interest in working with diverse student populations, and who would like to take the lead in developing a new Neuroscience Major at USF. Specialty area in Neuroscience: Open.

Full Job Description:

Job Responsibilities: We seek a motivated candidate to work with a steering committee of full-time faculty members at the University to administer and oversee the development of a new Neuroscience Major, to complement the existing and successful Neuroscience Minor. Duties include developing and staffing new neuroscience courses, as well as working with several departments on campus to ensure new students will have access to classes included in the major. The candidate would also teach courses in the Neuroscience Major, and in the first year, courses in a related discipline, such as Psychology or Biology, or in the Neuroscience Minor. The position is for one-year, with the possibility of renewal, at either 100% or 80% full-time. The former carries a teaching workload of 6 units/semester (3 4-unit classes over the course of the year), and the latter carries a teaching workload of 4 units/semester (2 4-unit classes over the course of the year). This is a reduction from the usual full-time teaching load in order to accommodate the significant administrative duties of the position with respect to the development of the new Major.

Minimum Qualifications: include a Ph.D. in Neuroscience or a related field, or advancement to candidacy (ABD), by January 2023; University teaching experience; evidence of a strong commitment to teaching; a strong commitment to undergraduate mentorship; an understanding of and commitment to support the mission of the University of San Francisco are required. The successful candidate must be able to offer their reflections on equity, and strategies for success in engaging with BIPOC students. Recent PhDs and those from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Required Materials: Consideration of applications begins immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should submit a cover letter summarizing interests and qualifications, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy and experience, evidence of teaching ability (including sample syllabi, teaching evaluations), a diversity statement (which may include your thoughts and/or experiences concerning equitable education for underserved and marginalized communities, your commitment to or experience with broadening participation in the field, experience working on a diverse team, and/or experience working with different communication/learning styles), and three letters of recommendation (requested upon submission of application). Any questions can be sent to NeuroscienceSearch@usfca.edu. For full consideration, applications should be submitted by January 16, 2023.

In order to better serve our Black-identified and Latinx students-who make up 15% and 21% of our undergraduate student body respectively-the University of San Francisco is seeking to hire a cohort of new faculty whose scholarship and/or community-engaged research and creative work focuses on the experiences of Black and Latinx communities, or antiracism, diversity, equity and inclusion more generally, and who have proven expertise and experience in mentoring Black, Latinx and first generation students.

USF is entering into the second year of a faculty diversity hiring initiative; in the first year, 70% of new full-time faculty hires were faculty of color. Junior BIPoC faculty are invited to participate in mentoring, community building and peer to peer opportunities coordinated by the Vice Provost for Equity, Inclusion and Faculty Excellence. Faculty also enjoy peer support through affinity groups such as the Asian and Asian American Staff/Faculty Council, Black Community Council, LGBTQ Caucus and La Colectiva of Latinx Staff and Faculty.

In addition all new faculty have access to a free membership with the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity and support from the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Center for Research, Artistic and Scholarly Excellence.
