Job Summary:
The Associate Dean of Retention and Persistence Programs in the Center of Academic and Student Achievement (CASA) will provide leadership and vision for divisional and University retention and success initiatives. In consultation with the CASA AVP/Dean, the Associate Dean will work to maintain and create new program initiatives in support of student retention, and improve four-year graduation rates based on student persistence trends, program assessment data and University goals.

The Associate Dean will supervise the Assistant Dean of Retention and Persistence Programs, whose primary responsibility, in collaboration with the faculty director, is the development and administration of the Black Achievement, Success and Engagement Program (BASE). In collaboration with the Assistant Dean, the Associate Dean will oversee administration of student support programs such as but not limited to: the PACT mentoring program for students of color, and the Muscat Scholars Program (MSP) for first generation students. These programs are part of a dynamic and comprehensive initiative that builds on USF's commitment to inclusive excellence and diversity by creating academically challenging, personally supportive, and empowering educational experiences for historically marginalized students.

The Associate Dean will also supervise and provide training and support to CASA Academic Success Coaches, overseeing all day-to-day functions, including mentoring on student cases, administrative policies/procedures, and interactions with other University divisions.

As a member of the larger staff within Student Life, CASA supports student development in the Jesuit Catholic tradition. The mission of Student Life is to fully support holistic student development within a social justice framework that prepares students to be caring, socially responsible citizens in our global and local community.

Full Job Description:
Specific Duties
  • Supervise and support staff development for the Assistant Dean of Retention and Persistence Programs, and CASA Academic Success Coaches.
  • Develop individualized yearly goals with the Assistant Dean of Retention and Persistence and CASA Academic Success Coaches, and oversee procedures and training to ensure a high quality and culturally sensitive service is provided to students.
  • Evaluate and determine immediate and long-term retention needs and strategies for underrepresented student populations including: Orientation, student development workshops and outreach programs, mentoring programs, scholarship opportunities, grants, and donations.
  • In collaboration with the Center for Institutional Planning and Effectiveness (CIPE), use Salesforce and Tableau reports to identify gaps in year to year retention and graduation rates.
  • Create a semesterly newsletter highlighting retention trends, programs and best practices to the University community.
  • Streamline programming and communication for underrepresented students/communities.
  • Provide academic overviews to parents and new incoming students for preview/orientation events. Serve as CASA liaison and work in close collaboration with Strategic Enrollment Management, including the Admissions office, University Registrar's Office/Graduation Center, and the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Serve on various divisional and university wide committees and working groups, including CASA internal committees.
  • Provide academic and holistic support to a caseload of undergraduate students.
  • Handle highly sensitive and confidential student related cases. Provide referrals to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Student Disability Services, Learning, Writing and Speaking Centers, etc., as needed.
  • Develop and maintain networks with colleagues at peer institutions to exchange best practices in the field.
  • Build partnerships and seek opportunities to advance first generation student success, for example, maintaining qualification to be a First-Gen Forward institution (NASPA).


Program Oversight
  • Oversee and administer the Muscat Scholars Program, including hiring and training of the summer program coordinator, graduate assistants, and peer mentors, as well as growing a MSP:1G community for all first generation students.
  • Collaborate with the recruitment/application/admission of participants in MSP/MSP:1G, PACT, and BASE.
  • Oversee implementation, development and assessment of MSP/MSP:1G, PACT, and BASE related programming.
  • Monitor and approve budgets, and collaborate on grant writing and fundraising efforts for MSP/MSP:1G, PACT, and BASE.


Administrative
  • Collaborate with other divisions on campus to streamline processes and ensure a seamless experience for underrepresented students.
  • Provide training and/or resources to faculty and staff serving underrepresented students.
  • Consult with colleagues on orientation and student events throughout the academic year.


Other Responsibilities
Requires work schedule flexibility to accommodate program needs (i.e., beginning later in the day and/or extending work hours as needed for events and programs). Responsibilities will involve some weekend assignments. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Seven to ten years experience in supervising with an emphasis on developmental education/student development theory and advising.
  • Master's degree required, (Doctorate preferred), in higher education administration, college student services administration, student affairs, counseling, sociology, ethnic studies, women's studies, gender studies or other related field and two to five years in multicultural programming experience required. Specific experience in providing direct services to historically underrepresented and LGBTQ students in an urban, multicultural environment preferred.
  • Ability to integrate developmental and multicultural student-centered success programming.
  • A willingness to respect and actively support the goals and visions of Jesuit education in general and the University of San Francisco in particular.
  • Excellent written, oral communication, and presentation skills are required for interaction with a variety of individuals (students, staff, faculty).
  • Experience with data analysis and storytelling.
  • Strong computer skills including website, newsletter, and social media content development. Knowledgeable navigating web-based and database advising applications preferred.
  • Effective as an adviser on an individual and/or group basis.
  • Proven ability to interact effectively and professionally with students, faculty, staff and administrators from diverse backgrounds.
  • Multi-tasking, organizational and caseload management skills.
  • Excellent leadership and team-building skills.
