Job Summary:
Under the general supervision and direction of the Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Professions ("the School"), the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Learning Innovation, is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to promote high quality pre-licensure and graduate nursing degree programs (to be referred to in this document as nursing programs) in the School. Specifically, this position provides leadership in planning, implementing, and evaluating clinical, experiential and immersive learning initiatives for the School in cooperation with other Associate Deans, Faculty and Staff. Associate Deans in the School work closely with the Dean to ensure the delivery of high-quality, accredited academic programs.

The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Learning Innovation oversees all aspects of clinical, experiential, and immersive learning experiences for the School's nursing programs. The Associate Dean fortifies School visibility, collaboration and relationships with clinical and community partners to provide enhanced learning opportunities and experiences for students, including recruitment of adjunct clinical faculty and clinical and community partners. The Associate Dean also oversees the operation and use of the Clinical Simulation and Skills Centers (CSC) at the School's San Francisco, Sacramento and Orange County campuses ensuring consistency of practice, and seeks to implement innovative immersive learning strategies that adapt to ever changing demands of the health care environment.

In collaboration with the Staff and Faculty, the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Learning Innovation contributes to ensuring that the School remains compliant with all relevant accreditation and professional licensing bodies, and is responsible for direct reports, including but not limited to the Faculty Director for Immersive Learning, Associate Director for Immersive Learning and Clinical Placement Coordinators.

The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Learning Innovation must have experience in academic, clinical or administrative nursing, or any combination thereof. They must have strong understanding of nursing education and excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and be able to perform at a high independent level.

As a member of the School's leadership team, the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Learning Innovation collaborates closely with the Dean, Senior Associate Dean and the rest of the Executive Leadership Team on policy making, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the School's activities and assists in ensuring that the University's vision, mission, and values are foundational elements in guiding decision-making and actions within the School.

Full Job Description:

50% - Clinical Affairs and Learning Innovation Management /Execution:
  • Provide strategic leadership for clinical, experiential and immersive learning across programs within the School's nursing departments to ensure consistency among both faculty and academic programming support, while achieving the educational goals of the School and the University.
  • Collaborate with the Dean and leadership team to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise policies that impact programs to ensure clear and relevant standardization across programs.
  • Facilitate regular meetings of the faculty to enable communication and faculty collaboration in planning, implementing, and evaluating curriculum aimed at continuing to offer diverse and well-coordinated clinical, experiential and immersive learning support for program curriculum.
  • Prepare / administer Clinical Simulation and Skills Centers (CSC) budgets with faculty input to ensure financial health and stability of the nursing departments and programs.
  • Oversee and direct the development of clinical and experiential placement sites to ensure that students gain clinical practice in the Bay Area's top healthcare organizations.
  • Provide managerial and strategic oversight and guidance to the simulation and clinical skills learning centers, including supervisor of the Faculty Director of Immersive Learning, the Assistant Director for Immersive Learning and other staff as applicable, e.g., student workers, temporary employees, and/or adjunct faculty, to ensure high-quality staffing and programming.
  • Provide managerial and strategic oversight and direct supervision of the Clinical Placement Coordinators for pre- and post-licensure programs.
  • Foster relationships with academic and industry stakeholders to ensure the School's connection to changes and trends happening in healthcare, health professions, and the higher education landscape, especially with regard to use of technology in education.
  • Provide ongoing input to leadership and faculty on emerging trends in healthcare technology and innovative learning strategies.
  • Participate in the evaluation of faculty as designated by the Dean.
  • Represent the School at regional, national, and international levels through conferences, participation in professional associations, etc. to maintain the School's presence as a leader in the field.
  • Discharge the duties of other members of the Executive Leadership Team in their absence as delegated to ensure cross-coverage of duties.

20% - Faculty Development:
  • Oversee and direct the recruitment, onboarding, orientation and development of part-time clinical adjunct faculty with the goal of hiring and retaining exemplary faculty who are leaders in Nursing.
  • Assure sensitivity to and work for anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI) issues and endeavors across the school and programs; proactive recruitment to support ADEI.
  • Participate in the evaluation of faculty as designated by the Dean.
  • In collaboration with the Dean, facilitate faculty pursuit of professional training opportunities and resources to enhance their growth and development.
  • Work with faculty and leadership to develop and implement opportunities for students to participate in inter-professional learning experiences.

10% - Compliance and Accreditation:
  • Participate in all efforts to evaluate, pursue, secure and maintain accreditation.
  • Collect and maintain evidence to demonstrate compliance with state and national accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.

10% - Scholarship:
  • Engage in scholarly activities, including but not limited to: research or scholarship in an area of personal expertise; support and facilitate student scholarly activities, especially those relating to simulation and immersive education strategies.

10% - Additional duties as assigned

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Provides oversight of all clinical, experiential and immersive learning (includes simulation and skills learning labs) to ensure the alignment of experiences with didactic and curricula content.
  • Collaborates with department chairs, faculty and executive leadership team as needed for the short-, intermediate- and long-term development and improvement of clinical, experiential and immersive learning experiences to improve and sustain positive programmatic outcomes.
  • Provides oversight of external clinical and community placements, which includes ensuring successful placement, tracking, and standardization, as well as addressing issues as they arise in relation to such placements.
  • In collaboration with the Dean, develops and maintains relationships with clinical, community and other external partners for the purpose of creating and sustaining high-quality and diverse clinical and experiential learning experiences.
  • In collaboration with the Dean, recruits and supports the development of clinical faculty with the goal of retaining exemplary clinical faculty who are leaders in nursing.
  • Represents the School at regional, national, and international levels through conferences, participation in professional associations, etc. to maintain the School's presence as a leader in the field.
  • Assure sensitivity to and work for anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI) issues and endeavors across the school and programs, including proactive recruitment to support ADEI.
  • Creates programmatic review documents for accreditors such as CCNE, BRN, and WSCUC and attends all institutional reviews.
  • Ensures compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards from AACN, CCNE, BRN, AANP, ANCC (non-exhaustive list).


Qualifications/Skills:
  • Significant knowledge of the use of technology in education with experience in simulation and immersive learning practices.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of conceptual and strategic thinking to participate in the development of academic program policies, procedures, and standards, as well as the School's mission, vision, and related strategic plans.
  • Experience in managing large scale projects.
  • Experience in analyzing and using data to guide activities, monitor and evaluate performance and prepare necessary reports.
  • Experience in curriculum development, administration, program development, and evaluation.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and conflict resolution skills with a demonstrated ability in working with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to be a team player, working with multiple stakeholders employing a positive solution-oriented approach.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Current knowledge of nursing practice at the pre-licensure and post-licensure program level.
  • Ability to lead, coach, and advise faculty.
  • Successful teaching experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience in the administration of accredited nursing programs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Outstanding planning, organizational and analytical skills.
  • A commitment to or former experience working with multicultural, underrepresented, underserved, or diverse communities.


EDUCATION / LICENSES / CERTIFICATION:
  • Doctoral degree in Nursing from a regionally accredited university required.
  • Unencumbered CA Registered Nurse license; APRN license and certification preferred
  • A minimum of five (5) year's continuous full-time experience, or equivalent, as a registered nurse providing direct patient care.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of full-time teaching experience as instructor.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of recent full-time administrative responsibility in a registered nursing education program, a hospital professional nursing education services program, in-patient care unit or out-patient clinic.
