Associate Dean, Undergraduate Nursing

Job Summary:
Under the general supervision and direction of the Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Professions (to be referred to in this document as the School), the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Nursing is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to promote high quality undergraduate/pre-licensure nursing degree programs (to be referred to in this document as undergraduate nursing programs) in the School, including the existing Baccalaureate Nursing, and pre-licensure portion of the Master's Entry Masters in Nursing. This position provides leadership in planning, implementing, and evaluating initiatives in cooperation with other Schools, as well as managing program requirements outlined by the regulatory and accreditation bodies. Associate Deans in the School work closely with the Dean to ensure the delivery of high-quality, accredited academic programs.

The Associate Dean for Nursing is responsible for all aspects of the School's undergraduate nursing programs including, but not limited to: development and improvement of programs, marketing strategy and enrollment growth, oversight of strategies for recruiting, retention, and career preparation of students in these programs. In collaboration with the staff and faculty, the Associate Dean for Nursing contributes to ensuring that the School remains compliant with all relevant accrediting and professional licensing bodies. The Associate Dean for Undergraduate Nursing will be responsible for direct reports, including Program Directors and staff specifically assigned to undergraduate programs, and target recruitment and retention of faculty teaching in pre-licensure programs.

As a member of the School's leadership team, the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Nursing will collaborate closely with the Senior Associate Dean and the rest of the Leadership Team on policy making, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the School's activities and assist in ensuring that the University's vision, mission, and values are foundational elements in guiding decision-making and actions within the School.

Full Job Description:

Nursing Programs Management / Execution 50%
  • Provide strategic leadership across undergraduate / pre-licensure programs within the School's nursing departments to ensure consistency among both faculty and academic programming support, while achieving the educational goals of the School and the University.
  • Collaborate with the Dean to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise policies that impact health-related programs to ensure clear and relevant standardization across programs.
  • Work in conjunction with the Associate Dean for Graduate Nursing Programs to assure effective movement from ME-MSN pre-licensure period into the graduate focus of the ME-MSN program.
  • Assure sensitivity to and work for anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI) issues and endeavors across the school and programs; proactive recruitment to support ADEI.
  • Facilitate regular meetings of the undergraduate faculty to enable communication and faculty collaboration in planning, implementing, and evaluating curriculum aimed at continuing to offer diverse and well-coordinated curriculum.
  • Prepare / administer undergraduate nursing program budgets with faculty input to ensure financial health and stability of the nursing departments and programs.
  • Oversee and direct the development of undergraduate nursing program clinical and field placement sites to ensure that students gain clinical practice in the Bay Area's top healthcare organizations.
  • Monitor and revise bulletins, class schedules, and additional program information to support undergraduate faculty leadership to consistently deliver high-quality, accurate, and timely program communications.
  • Foster relationships with academic and industry stakeholders to ensure the School's connection to changes and trends happening in healthcare, health professions, and the higher education landscape.
  • Represent the School at regional, national, and international levels through conferences, participation in professional associations, etc. to maintain the School's presence as a leader in the field.
  • Discharge the duties of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Nursing Programs and Senior Associate Dean in their absence as delegated to ensure cross-coverage of duties.
  • Provide oversight and guidance to the Clinical Skills Lab and Simulation Center, including:
    • Ongoing development of course-specific clinical skills and simulation activities to ensure that undergraduate students are strengthening their clinical skills and evaluation techniques by using real-world tools and curricula customized to student needs and professional/educational backgrounds.
    • Establish policies, procedures, and guidelines while maintaining a safe, secure, and legal work environment within the Lab and Center to enhance the efficiency and safety of these training environments.
    • Oversee and provide guidance for the Directors of the Clinical Skills Lab and Simulation Center by collaborating on recruitment, selection, orientation, and training of student workers, temporary employees, and/or adjunct faculty to ensure high-quality staffing and programming.
    • Work with Associate Dean for Graduate Nursing Studies to facilitate simulation activities linked with graduate programs.


Compliance and Accreditation 10%
  • Assure that the School remains compliant with all relevant accrediting and professional licensing bodies, as related to undergraduate nursing programs:
    • Serve as Board of Nursing Director to the California Board of Registered Nursing for undergraduate programs.
    • Participate in all efforts to evaluate, pursue, secure and maintain accreditation.
    • Assure collection and management of evidence to demonstrate compliance with state and national accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.


Student and Academic Services 20%
  • Collaborate with the School's recruitment staff to develop and oversee recruitment and enrollment strategies and orientation processes for undergraduate nursing students to increase program enrollment and enhance the student orientation experience.
  • Track and report data on Nursing Department undergraduate nursing student success, ensuring that future program and academic services planning is driven by relevant student performance and experience data.
  • Oversee the faculty's approach to and execution of addressing needs of undergraduate students in nursing programs whose academic performance is deficient to ensure quick issue identification and timely and equitable resolution for all students.
  • Assure sensitivity to and work for anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI) issues and endeavors across the school and programs; proactive recruitment to support ADEI.


Faculty Development 20%
  • Support undergraduate faculty and staff orientation and on-boarding ensuring that all new faculty and staff complete their course requirements within the stated timeline.
  • Participate in the recruitment and orientation for undergraduate faculty with the goal of hiring and retaining exemplary faculty who are leaders in Nursing.
  • Participate in the evaluation of undergraduate faculty as designated by the Dean.
  • Supervise / coach new undergraduate staff and faculty to provide leadership and professional support.
  • In collaboration with the Dean, facilitate undergraduate faculty pursuit of professional training opportunities and resources to enhance their growth and development.
  • Identify and recommend undergraduate faculty and staffing needs ensuring the School can continue to offer a best-in-class educational and professional experience for students, staff and faculty.
  • Collaborate with undergraduate faculty in integrating teaching, practice, and scholarship and ensuring equitable and reasonable faculty workloads.


Additional duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:
  • Doctoral degree required in Nursing or relevant field with credentials appropriate to appointment on faculty.
  • 5+ years of work experience in nursing education or a related field with progressive management / leadership responsibility.


Special skills needed:
  • Must have a California RN license.

  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of conceptual and strategic thinking to participate in the development of academic program policies, procedures, and standards, as well as the School's mission, vision, and related strategic plans.
  • Current knowledge of nursing practice at the undergraduate and graduate degree program level.
  • Experience in the administration of accredited nursing programs.
  • Experience in curriculum development, administration, program development, and evaluation.
  • Successful teaching experience in a higher education setting.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and conflict resolution skills with a demonstrated ability in working with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to lead, coach, and advise faculty.
  • Ability to be a team player, working with multiple stakeholders employing a positive solution-oriented approach.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Outstanding planning, organizational and analytical skills.
